Conventions of Pop Music Videos
Narrative

Some initial ideas we have about the narrative of our music video are:

  • A boy has gone to war and the artist is singing about missing him - showing shots of army clothing.

  • The girl is reminiscing memories of the boy and writing a letter to him.

  • She visits old places where they used to go together with flashbacks of them together.

Performance

Some locations we have thought we could use for the performance side of our music video are:

  • Parks

  • Beaches

  • Rural Areas

  • Suspension Bridge

Camera Shots/Angles

Some camera shots and angles we have thought about using for our music video are:

​

  • Shots of the girl crying - this leaves the audience wondering if the boy has died at war or not.

  • Close-ups of the artist to recognise the fact that it's a pop genre.

  • Wide shots to show the location  - this would be more for the narrative as these are not common for pop genres in music videos.

Other People's Ideas Of The Song

  • A girl getting over a breakup and she has a collection of his hoodies where she smells his cologne.

  • Flashbacks or looking back at old photos or her trying to do other things to take her mind off of the breakup.

  • A girl grieving over the death of her boyfriend - she feels his presence in the air still and is not ready to let him go.

  • Missing someone and wanting them back.

  • Someone's boyfriend leaving but not dying.

  • Showing small clips that reflect a broken relationship - places, pictures.

Initial Ideas Video

This was our initial ideas of what we planned the music video to be however, as we started filming we decided to adapt and change our ideas slightly. We kept the general idea about a girl singing about her boyfriend but we had several different ideas about why she was singing about him. The lyrics of the song are quite clear that she is missing him so we had to keep this idea. One idea we had was that she was in a long distance relationship and she is missing her boyfriend, another is that her boyfriend has just broken up with her and she wants him back and our final idea, which is what we decided to use, was that her boyfriend is going to off to the army and she is writing a letter to him because she is missing him and wants to see him - the music video will show flashbacks to their previous dates and time she spent with him and show how she is upset. This also leaves the audience wondering if her boyfriend has died in the army or has simply just not come back yet.
