MUSIC VIDEO THEORY
Andrew Godwin
Godwin's analysis of music videos states that there are five key aspects to a music video. These are:
-
The first point of Godwin's theory is 'thought through beat'. This first step of this is understanding the chorus and knowing what the lyrics actually mean. The second step is knowing the unique voice of the main artist in the song and, by listening to the artist's voice, working out the identification of who they are. For example, if we hear an Ed Sheeran song on the radio, many people listening would be able to work out that it is him singing as his voice is unique and well known. The third step of the first point is finding out the story of the song and finding out what is going on or what the artist is singing about - the music video also helps to find this out.
-
The second point of Godwin's theory is 'relationship between the song and visuals'. This shows three different ways of promoting the song which are, illustrate, where images and shots show the meaning of the lyrics. Disjuncture, where the meaning of the song is ignored in the music video. And, amplify, where the images and camera shots are repeatedly shown to make the audience remember.
-
The third point of Godwin's analysis of music videos is 'narrative and performance of the song'. This is when the character in the music video does exactly what the lyrics say, for example if the lyrics are saying 'jump' and the character is shown jumping in the music video at the same time.
-
The fourth point of Godwin's theory is 'technical aspect of a music video'. This means that Godwin thought that the general mise en scene aspects, including special effects, sound and editing, helps hold the the music video together.
-
The fifth and final point of Godwin's analysis of music videos is 'star image, lots of camera shots making him/her the centre of attention'. He thought that showing the artist alot in the music video made it more appealing to the audience and it helps to promote the artist's image in public in order to create more fame.
Laura Mulvey
Laura Mulvey's theory is about 'the male gaze'. This is where media texts are created through the eyes of a heterosexual male and the fact that woman are viewed for the pleasure of men. It can be identified in three different ways which are:
-
Men looking at women
-
Women looking at themselves
-
Women looking at women
Mulvey saw all of these ways as having a negative effect because she thought it made women look like they were objects that were to be admired for physical appearance and that it impacted women's views of themselves and their own worth.
Laura Mulvey also stated that the role of women is primarily:
-
As an erotic object for the characters
-
An erotic object for the spectators
