TYPES OF MUSIC VIDEO

Main Types of Music Video

There are three main types of music video which are:

  • Performance

  • Narrative

  • Conceptual

Music videos that fall in the performance category are music videos based purely on showing the artist perform. For example, the artist will be shown throughout the whole music video - this could be them being seen singing the song or them performing choreography. These types of music videos are very common for pop music videos. An example of this type of music video could be 'All In My Head (Flex)' by Fifth Harmony. The music video contains lots of different camera angles and shots and it also has loads of short, quick clips shown together as this helps the music video to stay exciting for the audience and keeps them entertained. It also needs to be quite a fast-paced music video as it is pop and the songs are typically quite fast so this fits with the beat.

Performance

Narrative music videos are about showing a continuous or multiple different story lines that follows through the whole music video - as if it is telling a story. This usually relates to the lyrics and the audience get an idea of what is happening. The music video and lyrics work together to help make sense of what is going on in the music video. These types of music videos are typically used for romantic songs as it is an easy way of telling the story, for example a breakup. They are also commonly used for slow pop songs or indie songs. The music video 'Perfect' by Ed Sheeran shows this type of music video as it is telling a story throughout the video and the audience can see what is happening.

Narrative

Conceptual music videos often don't make a lot of sense and are quite unusual or complicated. They show a single idea or concept in a confusing and odd way - this could be a way of showing its uniqueness and may be a good way to get it recognised or noticed if it goes well. There are often special FX and editing done in order to make this music video which could cost more money and this may add to the why they are not very popular. These types of music videos are also difficult for the audience to relate to and are more common for electro genres. The music video 'Eyes Wide Shut' by JLS shows this type of music video as it is quite bizarre and looks as if they are trying to create a dream effect of them being in a dream about a girl who keeps disappearing on them as they are dreaming. It also shows this type of music video because of the obvious special FX used and as it does not make much sense.
